Halberdier

The Halberdier is a promoted infantry class in the Fire Emblem series, exclusively appearing in the Tellius series of games. Through the work of the Fire Emblem hacking community, the Halberdier class can be added into a hack or game based on the GBA series. In the Markyjoe universe, they are a frequent joke.

Information

In Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, the Halberdier class was added in order to give the Soldier class the ability to promote and expand the potential of Soldier units. In Path of Radiance's sequel, Radiant Dawn, the Halberdier is given a further promotion into the Sentinel class. The Halberdiers are mostly proficient in lance weaponry and nothing else.

Meme

The Halberdier meme came into being during the live playthrough of the Ragefest IV submission Angel of Darkness when, after each early turn, the player would be given Halberdier units as reinforcements in order to bolster the starting team of Niko, Gabriel, and Lloyd. In the live chat, it was joked that, when the developers of Angel of Darkness (Lord Wolfram and Oranges) were unable to clear the chapter during playtesting, they simply added more Halberdiers to the map.

The meme gained traction as RandomSwordMaster began saying that the Halberdiers were the only units needed to clear the map. He further chronicled their exploits, as well as responded in shock when enemy halberdier reinforcements appeared.

When Marc and Kirby appear on the map, they come accompanied with three NPC Hero units. Only one of those Heros survived the onslaught, gaining the same praise as the Halberdiers. In the live chat, it's stated that the Hero would go on to later train halberdier units to become as powerful as him.

The Halberdier class, in the context of Ragefest, came into prominence during the playthrough of Angel of Darkness, but there was an early case of the Halberdier class in action, in the form of Syde Karaktur, one of the four main playable characters in the submission Tale of Purt.

In Heirs of Rage, the Heir daughter of RandomSwordMaster, RandomMyrmidon, resides in a location known as the Halberchasm, a dense sea of forest mainly populated by Halberdier units. She states to Ryokazi, much to her embarrassment, that she has a fetish for Halberdiers, explaining why she lives in the Halberchasm. In the public release of Heirs of Rage, the character Lune is added and she is of the Halberdier class.
