Though a single chapter, Matthew's Nightmare puts the titular character through three maps set in a dream world under Serra's control. Serra challenges Matthew to make it through all the challenges, or become her vassal. Matthew's Nightmare is regarded as one of the earliest examples of a good Ragefest entry, due to its creative traps and puzzles, however it is also regarded by some as not having aged well due to said puzzles being vague and said traps leading to trial-and-error gameplay. The chapter is often praised for its sense of humor and chapter concepts regardless.

Map 1
Map 1 is set in a Fog of War maze. The player must make their way to the throne while avoiding the promoted enemies, who do not move but can kill Matthew in one hit. Matthew must also gain levels by killing the regular enemies, because as soon as he reaches the throne, Batta appears and attacks Matthew one time: if he has more than 19 HP, he will always survive and move onto the second map. Placing Matthew on a mountain tile and allowing the enemies to attack him usually cleans them out safely. There isn't much else to this part of the chapter, other than the Sage, who has a Bolting tome.Map 2
Matthew now finds himself transformed into a Wyvern Lord, among a band of Falcoknights, and surrounded by Ballistae and Archers. The objective is to get the NPC to the door at the top of the map. However, it always rains on your turn and never the enemy's turn, and ending your turn on a tree tile will cause an automatic game over. Also, Matthew is holding a Death Lance, which is powerful, but like the Devil Axe, it can backfire on him. Rescue the NPC to carry him towards the door faster. Don't worry if anyone besides Matthew dies. When the NPC has made it to the door, Matthew must then make his way to the pool of water in the top-right to move onto the final map.Map 3
There's a lot going on here. Matthew must now kill Serra, but he can't do it alone. Matthew can recruit Oswin, Erk, Hector, and Sain in this map (Lucius can be recruited but turns into an enemy the next turn.) However, take note of Sonia and Limstella: The former uses a staff that changes Matthew into a Wyvern Lord. If this happens, you cannot recruit anyone. Limstella's staff changes him back to an Assassin. Note the squares marked red: These trap Matthew in a mountain trap, so avoid them. Better weapons are available in the southern house, but visiting it causes Kishuna to appear and silence Limstella, meaning you'll have to kill him to change back to Assassin. Sain's weapons are really the only ones able to kill Serra. After killing her, talk to Leila with Matthew, but immediately pull him back with Sain afterwards and lure Leila towards Serra to get them to fight. With Serra dead, the exit portal opens: It is located on the one tile that never changed the entire game, which is marked by a blue square. Have Matthew enter this tile to end the chapter.Trivia
