Pokemon GO! (Outside) Review
#1
I downloaded the game earlier today and after about 3 hours of wandering around I think I can form a solid review about it.

But first, what does GO have to offer as opposed to the typical Pokemon formula? Well aside from the obvious real world interaction, it does offer a basic feel to how being a real Pokemon trainer is like. Well, in the sense that you can walk around aimlessly and randomly encounter the cute little guys. But the way that evolution and leveling up (your character I might add) is, it feels a bit... Grindy.

When you catch a Pokemon, it will drop an Amount of Stardust and a Candy that is specific to that Pokemon. A certain amount of Stardust combined with a Candy for that Pokemon allows it to get stronger, however, a stupidly huge amount of those candies are also needed if you want to evolve said Pokemon. At best, you're gonna have to catch up to 10-15 of the same little fucker if ya want to evolve it. Which wouldn't be so bad if the encounters were a lot more frequent. Yup, encounters aren't all that annoying in the sense that they are few around walks. On top of that, the Pokemon generated in an area can change over time, making hunting for a specific Pokemon a bit difficult.

But enough about the Pokemon, how does the environment get incorporated? Well, the PokeStops are just points on the map in which you can get free items if you stop by, and as far as I can tell, they're completely random as well. The only things I've ever gotten were just more Pokeballs. And what they chose to be PokeStops are a bit questionable... The closest ones in my area are, a mural near a gas station, random corner to a fitness center, a clocktower to a optometrist, oh and a Park in my neighborhood. And to emphasize the point that the stops are questionable, Alex Hirsch tweeted that one of the stops in his area is a Scientology Church.

I would get into how battles operate, but I'm currently level 4 and you need to be 5 to challenge gyms, and as far as I can tell. Gyms are pretty much ran by fellow trainers. A person beats a Gym and then they defend their title as the Leader by assigning one of their Pokemon to said Gym. Which is creative, but I still hate the level restriction. Oh well, better Grind to the top.

Pokemon GO isn't pay to win either, the only thing you can purchase are in game coins. Said coins can only get ya more Pokeballs, Incenses to attract Pokemon, EXP Boosts that only last a certain amount of time, egg incubators, and that's pretty much it.

Now is the game worth getting? Considering it's free, yeah I would recommend trying it out yourself, it can make a simple walk a bit more fun. Just be warned that the servers can crash occasionally and it Fucks up the flow of things and can make a hunt worthless.

It's definitely encouraging me to go outside more often at least. I wonder if it was sponsored by Michelle Obama or something.

There is a video getting shot at with a fuckin gun while playing pokemon go. It's kinda funny in a weird way. Fortunately the guy didn't get hurt, but damn, to get shot at just because you wanted to hunt for that Doduo.

I have reached level 8, conquered a Gym on my own, defended said Gym numerous times, evolved a Pidgey and Ekans. Caught a Pidgeot visiting a Nursing Home, found a Golbat in the middle of the day, and met many other GO players that were all friendly.

Fuck, I did not expect to have this much fun with it. Going around with my best friend to catch other Pokemon, getting a little help from others in the form of defending our respected Gym and even using a Module at a Stop to give everyone nearby a chance to catch more Pokemon. It feels great to find others around and feel some form of connection or cooperation. With all this in there, I don't even mind if the servers crash every once and a while, because I say it's worth this nice feeling.

At least for me it is.

In other news, I joined Team Instinct because I actually like hatching eggs, Zapdos is my favorite among the Bird Trio, and Yellow happens to be my love's favorite color. That, and because I've been seeing too much Red around and I'm kinda sick of it. Blue I'm ok with, but no way I'm letting my Gym fall to damn Red Team!

Biggest problem for me so far is running out of pokeballs. I'm constantly scavenging for them and I only have like 2 pokestops within a mile radius of my house. And catching pokemon is the only way to get EXP (I think) so I'm forced to get whatever I can from the pokestops. Would be much easier if beating gyms gave you EXP.

So far from what I've been hearing from others about how addicting Pokemon Go is, the cynical part of me is all thinking like:

"So far that app seems to only showcase Generation 1 pokemon, so I wont be able to catch that ghost-sword that I've been fond of. Awww, its also not compatible with Pokemon Bank so I cant transfer them to both of my Gen 6 games. Thats Unfortunate. Oh well there's always the lengthy process of catching all those Gen 1 pokemon via FireRed, and then transferring them through the Gen 4/5 games through to pokemon bank. But I'm lazy so I'll most likely obtain them through the GTS in Pokemon Y or Omegaruby.... Plus the first legendary revealed for Pokemon Go seems to be MOTHAFUCKING JOHN CENA"

...

Admittedly, the app does look very appealing despite the microtransactions and the GPS mechanics actually work, but I'm hoping there's some sort of connectivity between Pokemon Go and Pokemon Sun/Moon similar to the tamogatchi Poke Walker in Heartgold/Soulsilver or like the Dream World to the Gen 5 games. oooo.... such curiosity, but so far I'm all like 7.8/10. Needs more water Smile
Oh yea I should probably update some things
